Compliments of the season!!!
Seems like the appropriate greeting after 8 weeks of resolute protests, keyboard activism, facebook lamentations, and agitation during which we even took over Twitter Nigeria with #OlayinkaMustGo, he hasn't gone anywhere and has even ordered us to come to him, to school. The inevitable question here is: what has our protest, doggedness and our unionism achieved? Have our requests pre-strike been attended to and duly granted? Let's examine one by one.
We asked for steady electricity, constant water supply and an end to victimization - the release of Mote, our fellow student. On the electricity front, the school has promised a minimum of 4 hours light daily should PHCN fail us. Can we consider this a good compromise? Do we go on strike if it reverts to the old ways? What about those who do TDB during exam time, is a promise of 7pm to 11pm electricity good enough?
They promised daily water supply. Sounds good? Remember it's faulty water systems that caused the water problems of Queen Idia and Awo Hall. Student execs had to step in to solve these problems and were reprimanded for it. What happens if water systems in other halls go faulty during exam period? Remember, water supply is highly dependent on light, that brings us back to 7 11 (as it is being called) problem, is at least 4 hours of light enough to pump sufficient water that we need for the whole day?
With the new Student Union Executives already sworn in, is this a ploy to swear-in people that can be manipulated? Or kill the Aluta spirit? Or even go as far as making them sign the undertaking forms on our behalf? Is Nifemi willing to make one of his first acts continuing the good fight, if need be?
Mote has not been released, and there is no update as regards his situation. Do we take this up and reinstate the union’s stance that “An injustice to one is an injustice to all”? Or if you’re one of those that just wants to graduate ASAP, do we clamour for the SU to accept this injustice once again so we may be closer to graduation?
There are whispers here and there and some of us might have said it, if not to our friends, we might have at least thought of it in our heads. The question: has our union failed us? Even Speaker realised the importance of this question because in an SU released BC, he answers "The next course of action will be dictated by the students. But I have not failed even if some say I have."
Quick question: Did we really expect that a day of trending on Twitter is enough to remove someone that was elected barely 6 months ago? Did we think the power was in our hands? Or was it simply a gambit to get outside attention to our issues? Although one must admit that some of his comments in the “media chat” were inciteful, did we make all the right counter moves?
Here’s what we want to know: What do you think the strike has achieved? Let us know what you think in the comment section.
